I like to draw, and often used the charcoal from my campfire for my drawing tool.
But when I was really serious, I poked holes in the top of a tin can lid and cut
twigs of cherry or tag alder into lengths to fit the tin. I dropped the whole can into
the fire with the top up. The curls of smoke turned darker and darker grey until it
was black. Then, I grabbed the tin with tongs and set it aside to cool. Any sticks
that were not now charcoal done were dropped back into the fire for five more
minutes.

'I can shoot a tin can off the fence with a .22 at fifty paces.' 'I don't believe you,
Lorna.' Lachlan clutched his stomach. Billie hoped he managed to control himself
because if he didn't it was going to hurt. She was grinning herself. Lachlan had
offended their octogenarian guest with his disbelief and now Lorna was telling
him to get the rifle. Lachlan was shaking his head. 'I'm sorry. I can't allow
someone without a gun licence to handle a firearm.' 'Excuse me, Mr Byrnes, I
carried a gun on ...

Most of us were raised to appreciate that frozen vegetables are superior in color,
taste, and texture to canned vegetables; this is true whether the vegetables are in
a tin can or a glass mason jar. Furthermore, most of us were raised to have
access to fresh and frozen meat, whenever we want it. Pressure canning was a
necessity in the days when, in order to preserve meat, you had to either cure and
smoke it or pressure-can it. Not only are there relatively few people who pressure
-can ...

The best location for a hotel is a warm and sheltered place, such as a southern-
facing (in the northern hemisphere) wall or hedge. The first insects are
alreadyactive towards the end of winter and would be actively seeking for such a
place to settle. Other species like to furnish their nests with clay, stone and sand,
or in between bricks. Even a simple bundle of bamboo or reeds, tied or put in an
old tin can and hung in a warm place, is very suitable for solitary bees. The
bamboo must be ...

CHAPTER XX – A HAPPY DAY, AND AN ANXIOUS NIGHT LAURA and Billy and
Alice were out in the garden picking potato bugs. Each carried a tin can, into
which the bugs were thrown—Billy had his can fixed up specially with a wire bail.
“You're not pickin' your row clean,” scolded Laura, examining a vine Billy had just
passed. “Look there! You left four bugs on this one vine.” “I guess they're just little
bugs, those soft little bugs,” said Billy, rather sheepishly, yet with no apology in
his ...

Polly sat on her little chair with her feet propped up on a tin box. “Don't get
discouraged. One of these days the sun will come out, and then we will be able to
spread all the clothes out on the grass. The blankets and comforters will probably
dry better if we hang them over the wheels so the wind can whip around and
under them.” Permilla sat down on the trunk, lowered her head, and wept. “Just
cry, daughter. It's better to let the tears flow and loosen the emotions.” Polly put
her hand on ...

We've definitely found this true in our homestead life. As much as we spend on
food and other necessities, and things we want rather than need, it's still
drastically below the levels we spent when we lived ... uses valuable energy and
resources in and of itself, but because it is the most convenient of the three
concepts, and is therefore the most favored. After all, recycling a tin can is still, as
far as the convenience of the individual consumer is concerned, the same as
throwing it away.

Tin resists weather stoutly. Tinned goods, as most of us are aware, are made of
sheet iron coated with tin. So long as the tin stands good, so will the iron, but
whenever the tin film is rubbed off or worn through rust attacks the iron and the
usefulness of the article is destroyed. It is marvellous how thin a sheet of iron and
how delicate a skin or envelope of tin can together be turned out by the
manufacturer. And aluminium has, we suspect, a future before it, in connection
with parts of our ...
